Howdy, I'm Dan.
I am not a Buddhist, but concerning religions, I'm closer to being a Buddhist than anything else, and I'm exploring Buddhism. My initial interest in Buddhism came from the book "Zen Guitar" which I read in about 2004. I was impressed with the tidbits of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book. After that I began reading more books that were more directly about Buddhism. Some of the ideas in some of those books seem kinda whacko, but I reserve the right to change my mind about those ideas as I get further down the eight-fold path. However, most of the stuff I read of the Buddha's teachings really resonates with me, and Lord knows my mind needs a lot of work, and I think that Buddhism will help me out there. Did I just admit that my motivations are mostly selfish?
I am a beginner at Buddhism. During my few years of reading Buddhism books I have started trying to meditate a few different times, but it never lasted more than about two weeks before I would give up, because I really never knew what I was doing, and I felt like an idiot, and I knew no Buddhists to help give me any direction (the density of Buddhists in the RGV is pretty low). About 5 weeks ago now I met with the McAllen meditation group for the first time, and somehow that really inspired me. I have been meditating almost daily since then--OK, only 10-15 minutes a day typically--but even in this short time, I have seen positive effects which have been very encouraging. I still feel like an idiot when meditating sometimes, but I guess that's part of the package for a Westerner. Anyway, just yesterday I took a major step closer to Enlightenment when I ordered my first meditation bench.
Other assorted extraneous info: I'm a married guy with two sons, one in college and one in high school. I am a biologist working for the Evil Empir... ahem... the federal government. I enjoy playing guitar and piano (I'm not saying I'm attached to either of those things ). |

You're welcome. Who are you by the way?

On ebay. The guy I'm getting it from builds them. The item title is "Buddha Bum Meditation Bench Folding(curved bottom Legs)". I'm not too sure about the curved bottom legs, but I thought they might work better with my long legs than a bench in which the seat angle with respect to the floor is fixed. |

That's the one. I'm getting one of the optional cushions too, so its easier on the "bum". |

Cool. Keep us posted. I may ask for it for my b'day gift this August. _________________ ___________________

Regarding the meditation bench, so I've had it for 3 weeks or so now, and I do like it. I like the curved leg bottoms. I thought they might make me feel a little unsteady, but they don't. I thought the price was decent, $28 + $13 for the cushion + $16 for shipping.
The cons: It took over two weeks from the time I hit the "Buy it Now" button til I got the bench (not a problem for me, but some people reading this might not be as patient as me ). There's a heckuva lotta glue left around the hinges. That's purely an aesthetic issue, but it seemed a little odd. The cushion is held to the bench loosely by velcro straps, and it tends to want to travel. I got some more velcro, and anchored the cushion to the bench with it, and I like it better now.
Stay tuned and we'll see if that "Guaranteed Enlightenment in 90 days" claim is true. _________________ To be obsessed with the destination is to remove the focus from where you are. -Philip Toshio Sudo, in Zen Guitar |

Good luck with that warranty.
I am going to buy for my belated b'day this bench:
It's from the Monastery Store. _________________ ___________________
